Shipping Container builds have been a constant source of creativity in the ever-growing housing market over the last few years. They are already built wind and water tight and can be shipping directly from the factory, even going so far as to have custom cut-outs pre-ordered.
In Salt Lake City, a group of eco-builders are taking container builds to new heights by creating 83 affordable studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments out of cargo-worthy shipping containers. The term cargo-worthy refers to a container being in used condition. In this particular build, that means that they have only been used once or twice.
Eco Box Fabricators, a Salt Lake City local company says they are looking to provide affordable housing in a growing economy.
“When the cost of one apartment unit in this valley is $250,000, that is not affordable. That’s not low-income housing,” Rod Newman, owner of Eco Box Fabricators said. “And that’s what we’re trying to do here is create true low-income housing.”
The units, 83 in total, are expected to be available later this year. They are proposed to be stacked on top of each other as much as 6 units high. They will be offered specifically to renters who are on a waitlist to receive subsidized housing. Many people on this waitlist are living in poverty but are wanting to provide better housing for their family. This project allows for families to be able to enjoy quality living spaces within the limits of their budget- something that many Americans living under the median income level are looking for.
This new build in Salt Lake City is yet another example of creative, out of the box thinking to solve a growing economic problem, working to re-use quality shipping containers to create comfortable living spaces that meet the needs of under-served Americans.
